So today at school, I learned that there is a proposed school board policy to start censoring the school newspaper because one of the editors in chief wrote an article about rape. The article was really well written and described the rape culture at my high school, and really brought awareness to a problem that needs to be talked about. (link-http://goo.gl/EC6wpZ) This is the most highly sold edition of the Cardinal Columns to date, and there’s been nothing but support from the student body and staff until now.
Our superintendent read the article and was displeased. He felt it was too negative and didn’t reflect the high school. He decided the best course of option was to create a new policy that would require all articles that did not please him to be censored. He told the advisor that articles like “The Rape Joke” would never be published again, as well as articles like the one written about a proposed ordinance in my city that would include transgender/non gender conforming people in our anti-discrimination policy. The author of the article wrote a letter to the superintendent, telling him her thoughts and feelings on the matter and several students have written letters as well. (link-http://goo.gl/xyW0Q1)
The student body is incredibly displeased, and one of the students has started a petition to tell our superintendent that this is unacceptable and infringing on our first amendment rights. If you could take a few seconds and sign the petition, that would be incredibly appreciated. Please help us put an end to the arbitrary censorship of students. (link-http://goo.gl/3InUV5)
